They paid about $2 million for the Trickling Springs plant and store in Chambersburg, Pa., as well as the defunct creamery\u2019s trucks, trailers, warehouse and intellectual property, South Mountain co-owner Tony Brusco said. The judge and trustee involved in Trickling Springs\u2019 Chapter 7 bankruptcy case signed off on the sale, he said.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/a-pennsylvania-dairy-was-built-on-mennonites-trust-and-money-now-theyre-left-holding-the-bag\/2019\/12\/16\/39ab58aa-fffa-11e9-8bab-0fc209e065a8_story.html?itid=lk_readmore_manual_5\">A Pennsylvania dairy was built on Mennonites\u2019 trust and money. Now they\u2019re left holding the bag.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Once the Trickling Springs plant is serviced and licensed again, it will start producing milk for the retail market, Brusco told The Washington Post. At least at first, the revived brand will focus on bottled organic milk, including chocolate milk, whole, 2 percent, skim and cream. Two farmers who used to sell organic milk to Trickling Springs have agreed to partner with the rejuvenated company, Brusco said.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cTrickling Springs had a very strong brand, and they were known for organic milk, which is something we currently don\u2019t offer,\u201d says Brusco, who owns South Mountain with his wife, Abby, as well as his brother-in-law Ben Sowers and his wife, Kate. The family hopes to have Trickling Springs milk back in retail stores by September. While retailers have not committed to buying the milk yet, several are interested, Brusco said, including <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/momsorganicmarket.com\/\">Mom\u2019s Organic Market<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">After Trickling Springs shuttered last fall, South Mountain hired a handful of its former employees. The company expects to add another 25 to 30 employees to staff up for the relaunch of Trickling Springs, Brusco said. South Mountain also plans to use the recipes it purchased to roll out some of Trickling Springs\u2019 beloved ice creams, but under the South Mountain brand. It even may eventually bring back Trickling Springs\u2019 organic butter, Brusco said.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cObviously, we\u2019re trying to ease into this so we don\u2019t overpromise and underdeliver,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/former-trickling-springs-owner-faces-federal-criminal-charges\/2020\/01\/31\/2e9fbf2c-43a3-11ea-b5fc-eefa848cde99_story.html?itid=lk_readmore_manual_12\">Former Trickling Springs owner faces federal criminal charges.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">South Mountain wants to avoid the alleged overexpansion that, in part, led to Trickling Springs\u2019 demise, Brusco said. In January, the Pennsylvania Banking and Securities Commission ordered the four former owners of Trickling Springs, including de facto financial officer Philip Riehl, to pay nearly $4.4 million in fines for violations of the Pennsylvania Securities Act of 1972 and other regulations. The men were also permanently barred from the securities business, following an investigation into their practice of financing the creamery with money from their Mennonite community without telling investors that Trickling Springs was basically insolvent.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">In February, Riehl <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edpa\/pr\/berks-county-accountant-pleads-guilty-orchestrating-one-largest-pennsylvania-based\">pleaded guilty to conspiracy and fraud charges<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in what federal prosecutors called one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in Pennsylvania history, which \u201ctargeted members of the Mennonite and Amish religious communities in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, of which the defendant is a member.\u201d Prosecutors said the scheme swallowed up nearly $60\u00a0million in investor cash. Riehl is expected to be sentenced soon.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">All four former owners were excommunicated from their Mennonite churches over their dealings with Trickling Springs.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cAt the end of the day, we\u2019re doing this because we have a very strong passion for local food, and we want to connect that to our community,\u201d said Brusco.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\" class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cI\u2019m not limiting us on size, but we\u2019ll never be that corporate structure.
